Frugal Fridays: What I Don’t Buy Used

I buy almost all of my children’s clothing used and this year got some amazing finds which I’ll share soon, but I thought for Frugal Friday I’d do a post on what I don’t buy used. A bit of a twist if you will! :)

  • Carseats and booster seats – both of mine are in carseats/boosters. My daughter is the weight/height of a typical 7-year-old and my son is the weight/height of a 4-5 year old. They will be in boosters for quite some time (my son has a high back booster and my daughter has a traditional booster)! I personally don’t purchase or accept donated used carseats or boosters because of safety expert recommendations that you should purchase new carseats for each child, they should never be used past their expiry dates and after an accident (however minor) they should be replaced. For me the risk isn’t worth taking!
  • Cribs/crib mattresses – same thing as above, just not worth the risk.
  • Helmets – again, you never know the history of something unless you’ve owned it yourself. Even a tiny hairline crack in a helmet can reduce its effectiveness.
  • Shoes – I’ve read a few times that your shoe (especially children whose feet are growing) molds to the shape of your foot and for this reason used shoes are not recommended. Even though I don’t purchase used, I am still able to get good shoes on a budget. More about that in another post.
  • Underwear/swimsuits/towels – self explanatory! :)

What do you not purchase used?
